Weekend SweetSpot – Yorkshire Dales – Grandeur and Millstone Grit

Planning a quick getaway? To help you make the most of your outdoor leisure time, weathertrending picks out the Weekend SweetSpot – an area of the UK that we think looks one of the better placed, weather-wise, for the upcoming weekend.

There are few parts of the UK that offer the weekend visitor such a diverse range of sights and activities as the Yorkshire Dales. Nestled within the spine of northern England, it’s an area of huge tradition and pride. The limestone walls, mills and scattered hamlets have stood, virtually unaltered, for centuries. These are visible emblems to a proud tradition, built on sheep-farming and lead-mining.

The geology of the area is unique. If you’re a rockclimber or caver, then you are are spoilt for choice. But if you are happy with a less strenuous jaunt, so a walk to Malham Cove’s stunning limestone pavement, or nearby Gordale Scar, will be richly rewarded.

After its eventful past, peace has descended on the ruins of Bolton Abbey – tucked away in the folds of Wharfedale. Each dale has its own historic tale to tell. But many of their industries continue to thrive to this day.  So it would be rude not to try some of Wensleydale’s famous cheeses. Alternatively, you could sup one of the many ales that are brewed across the area?

We recommend you take a seat on the famous Settle to Carlisle Line and experience one of the most picturesque train journeys in the land. Crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, you’ll have a bird’s eye view, thanks to the wonder of victorian engineering?

A bright and crisp weekend will greet you. There may be a nip of dawn frost in the air, but then the days should see plenty of wintry sunshine. It will be chilly though. So plenty of layers will be needed, especially if you journey onto the high fells.
