Weekend SweetSpot – County Antrim – In giant’s footsteps

Planning a quick getaway? To help you make the most of your outdoor leisure time, weathertrending picks out the Weekend SweetSpot Рan area of the UK that we think looks one of the better placed, weather-wise, for the upcoming weekend.

With the prospect of cold continental winds making a short sharp return to our shores again this weekend, sheltered northwestern parts of the UK should avoid the brunt of the chilly conditions.

And you can’t get much more northwestern than County Antrim. This Northern Irish gem offers such variety to the weekend visitor – all within easy reach.

Head north out of Belfast, and you’re soon in the depths of rural seclusion. As you rise onto the plateau, the views over the winding Glens of Antrim towards the remote horizon have remained unaltered for centuries.

Along the famous coastal route are many hidden treats – be they quaint harbours, historic castles or expansive beaches. Such peace and solitude as you look out to sea.

The most famous attraction of all is a ‘must’ for the first-time visitor. The Giant’s Causeway – millions of years in the making – lives up to its billing as a World Heritage Site. Could nature really have created such symmetrical shapes in the rock? Or did Finn MacCool have a hand in its creation after all?

The weather looks dry and bright for most of the weekend. But please take plenty of layers! Even this sheltered corner of Britain will feel the bite of the easterly wind. All the more reason to taste a dram or two of the famous Bushmills Irish Whiskey to warm the cockles.
