Weekend SweetSpot – Isles of Scilly – A ‘world’ away from the mainland

Planning a quick getaway? To help you make the most of your outdoor leisure time, weathertrending picks out the Weekend SweetSpot – an area of the UK that we think looks one of the better placed, weather-wise, for the upcoming weekend.

With spring weather wafting up from the south, this weekend may finally be your time to emerge from ‘hibernation’ and explore the great outdoors. Well, with just a short voyage by sea or air, you will be transported to an island wilderness with a warmth all of its own.

The Isles of Scilly comprise five inhabited islands,  each with it own distinctive personality. Over 2000 people are lucky enough to call this “home”.

The walks are simply stunning, and not only for the stunning views of the coastline. You’ll be treated to some of the UK’s more unusual flora and fauna. The uniquely mild climate here makes the islands a haven for many a rare species.

There are regular guided tours – by bus, bike or on horseback. Why not take a wildlife safari to the Eastern Isles or the Western Rocks to spot seabirds and seals? Then you can head out to Bishop Rock Lighthouse, England’s final frontier.

Kayaking, snorkelling and paddle-boarding are among the many water-based activities. And not surprisingly, the islands’ maritime heritage ensures that many a shipwreck can be found offshore for intrepid divers to explore.

The weather will be variable but never too cold. We can expect some showers, but also some lengthy spells of sunshine. And the winds will stay quite light.
