Fancy a mid-autumn break? To help you make the most of your outdoor leisure time, weathertrending highlights the Monthly SweetSpot. For October, we explore the delights of Sussex. We pick out some of the events and attractions to look forward to in the area.
Sussex
Have you noticed a nip in the air these last few mornings? Autumns’s coming on, isn’t it? But tucked away in the shelter of the South Downs, those wintry north winds are last to reach our southernmost counties. In fact, Sussex has a microclimate and a quirky landscape all of its own.
Historic coastline
The seaside offers huge variety too. Why not start your trip by the historic harbour-side at Bosham. This quaint village has a rich history that stems back as far as King Canute (via King Harold and the Bayeux Tapestry). From the bobbing sailing dinghies of Bosham, the pebbly beaches of the Witterings and Littlehampton offer the winter walker much wider windswept vistas out to sea.
Sea meets downland at the other end of the county, resulting in magnificent precipitous chalk cliffs. The beauty of Seven Sisters will take you breath away! Then for a change of pace, maybe make your way to the bustle of Brighton?
Weald and Downland
But it’s not just the seaside the Sussex has to offer. Take a wander inland along the popular South Downs Way. Alternatively, discover some of the prettiest towns and villages in England by wandering the Sussex Weald, before settling down for a well-earned meal in one of the many rustic inns that the county boasts.
The weather does look like behaving itself through much of October, with plenty of dry weather on offer. Read John’s latest month-ahead forecast here
Whatever the weather, by the end of your visit, you will be struck by just how much variety Sussex offers at every turn too.
