Circumzenithal Arc

This is another effect caused as the sun’s rays are refracted by the icy crystals found in cirrus clouds. On this occasion the light enters the crystal through the flat plane of the prism but leaves it through a side plane. The resultant distortion of the light spectrum gives the appearance of an ‘upside down rainbow’.
