Explosive Cyclogenesis

This refers to the rapid intensification of an area of low pressure by at least 24hPa in 24 hours. Another term used for this is a ‘Bomb’. However, explosive cyclogenesis is not as unusual as it may sound. In the North Atlantic, it can occur several times a year, especially during the winter period.
