Indian Ocean Dipole

This is an oscillating pattern of sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern Indian Ocean. The 'positive' phase denotes warmest waters in the west compared with further east, and vice versa. The phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) affects rainfall patterns in adjacent regions, such as Africa, India, SE Asia and Australasia; and it can indirectly influence weather patterns further afield across the globe.
