Sting Jet
On the rear side of rapidly developing mid-latitude depressions, a cold conveyor belt of air descends from high altitude. Sometimes, when rain or snow evaporate within the this zone, dry, cold air can accelerate towards the ground as a jet of very strong winds. Whilst this jet is narrow and may only last a short period of time, some of the most damaging wind events are the result of Sting Jets, as they rapidly move across land over a few hours.
